This Landscape Architect Gains Inspiration from Parks
Work starts with an idea and ends with a thoughtfully designed space
What is your name and job title? Carol Sperat, Project Specialist with the Denver Service Center (DSC) Design and Construction.
What experience and education do you have? I have a Masters in Landscape Architecture from University of Colorado, Denver. I'm new to the Nation Park Service (NPS). The majority of my career has been working as a landscape architect for design firms focused on commercial real estate development, new community design and entitlements. I have also worked with non-profits and grassroots organizations to design parks and master plans to help facilitate community-based projects in Colorado.
What is a typical day like? I’m currently involved in four major projects at various stages of design and construction. The majority of my day is spent managing the administrative tasks of projects and aiding teams through the process. At major project milestones, I go to the park to work with staff, visit the project site and help guide the project to completion. As much as I enjoy all aspects of my job, being in the field is always a highlight.
What career advice would you give to someone who wants to follow a similar path? The projects are so diverse at NPS so don’t assume that you may not have relevant experience. That being said, all NPS projects need people that have strong experience in design and construction and comfortable working with diverse groups. You will be asked to manage projects outside your skill set – have confidence in your skills and experiences.
What have you enjoyed most so far in your new role and why? I’m amazed at this point in my career that every day is an opportunity to work for an organization that does so many amazing projects that make positive impacts on the places I love. Days that I get to spend in the parks for “work” are special.
