Travel Itinerary: Montpelier, Idaho
Settlers had now crossed into Oregon Territory and had a difficult road ahead. The Big Hill just before Montpelier was one of the steepest and longest descents of the trail. However, this led into the Bear River Valley, a scenic stretch with plenty of access to fresh water and resources. After leaving Montpelier travelers marveled at a number of naturally carbonated pools, including Soda Springs, that they took advantage of for drinking, baking bread, and washing clothes.
