My Park Story: Tom Matkovits
For six months, I served as the NPS site construction manager during the final phase of the Anacapa wharf rehabilitation project.
Due to limited facilities, typically there were just 5 - 10 personnel on the island including construction workers and park staff. After the workday wrapped up, I enjoyed the solitude of exploring Anacapa on my own. The sunset views from Inspiration Point were majestic. This time lapse was taken in late January. Two hours compressed into 25 seconds.
As the sun went down the sea lions were barking in the distance, and hundreds of brown pelicans soared by riding the thermals to their rookeries for the night. Capped off at the end with Venus dropping by for a cameo. Walking back in the dark, the lights shining from the mainland to the northeast felt a lot further than the 12 miles that separated us.
