Alaska district governor John Brady began collecting totem poles in 1903. Tlingit and Haida chief gifted totem poles from various places in southeast Alaska. The totem poles were brought to Sitka, Alaska. They were then taken to exhibitions in St. Louis, Missouri, and Portland, Oregon. The totem poles were then brought back to Sitka. They were arranged to form a totem trail in what is now Sitka National Historical Park.
