Poet Laureate Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson Tells a Story of Finding Identity at the National Park
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson, and dance artist Amber Ortega are teaming up for a virtual poetry performance this year for DreamWeek. DreamWeek celebrates our humanity by creating environments for civil and civic engagement in San Antonio during the week of Martin Luther King Day. This virtual poetry performance focuses on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the midst of uncertainty, insecurities and simply not knowing. It is about identity, heritage, and finding peace with who you are. This performance acknowledges the good inside and celebrates it so it may radiate outwardly.
Self love is a compass. Reflection is an anchor.
Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson is a San Antonio native. She is the first Black, Poet Laureate of San Antonio (2020-2023.) Andrea has been a performance artist for over twenty years and she serves as a Teaching Artist for Gemini Ink.
Amber Ortega is a choreographer, director, writer, and educator. She enjoys creating dialogue between artists with varying practices to encourage broader ideas of art and art-making.
All are invited to experience this original poetry, song, and dance performace on Facebook Live with the beautiful backdrop of Mission San Juan. Learn more about the event here. After January 23, you can still view the video on our Facebook page.
