And Whereas, General Grant was elected as the nation's 18th president, serving from 1869 until 1877. And Whereas, President Grant secured the ratification of the 15th Amendment prohibiting racial discrimination with respect to voting rights and signed into law the creation of the Department of Justice and a Civil Rights Act that upheld the 14th and 15th Amendments. And Whereas, President Grant achieved significant benchmarks in peace, including the Treaty of Washington, which inaugurated permanent peaceful relations between the US and Canada and between the US and Britain, and established the principle of international arbitration as a means of peacefully resolving international disputes.
And whereas, President Grant's appointees to the District of Columbia government made vast improvements to the city, ushering in a new modern era of Washington, DC. Now, therefore, I, the Mayor of Washington DC, do hereby proclaim April 27th, 2022, as Ulysses S Grant Day in Washington, DC. Signed Muriel Bowser, Mayor.
