Feed Post: Introducing Lancaster History

In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, visitors can learn about some of the earliest episodes of anti-slavery resistance in the United States. Uprisings and resistance against slavery evolved into organized efforts, daring escapes, and legal challenges, culminating in the movement we know today as the Underground Railroad. Many escaping enslaved peoples traveled up into Pennsylvania by way of the Columbia River Crossing between the towns of Wrightsville in York County and Columbia in Lancaster County. This 1824 map from the LancasterHistory (@lancohistory) collections shows the close connection between both counties and how that could facilitate easier travel between areas.
