Project Profile: Pacific Shoreline Ecosystems Restoration
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
Federal Lands | FY23 $300,000
The National Park Service will employ youth to remove marine debris from coastal habitats in Alaska and Pacific West region parks. Cleanup efforts will focus on debris along coastal strands and rivers flowing directly into coastal areas that impact national parks. Teams will work seasonally in different areas to take advantage of safe field conditions. Debris will be bagged, removed, and disposed of appropriately.
Why? Marine debris is a persistent problem causing injury and death to wildlife as well as impacting visitor use and experience along coastal areas, including remote wilderness. This multiregional project supports the Arctic-Pacific Ocean Stewardship Strategy.
What else? The removal of marine debris from a minimum of 25 miles of coastal habitat in at least 8 Arctic-Pacific Ocean parks will benefit the ecosystem and the wildlife and people that depend on a healthy coastal environment.
