National Seed Strategy | FY22 $150,000
The National Park Service will collect and store Joshua tree seeds to establish long-term seedbanks for Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve.
Why? Joshua trees are a vulnerable species, and a large seedbank will better prepare both parks for future restoration needs as well as climate change response actions. In Mojave National Preserve, park managers are collecting seeds from fire-prone areas to better support preservation of the eastern variety of Joshua tree that may be extremely susceptible to wildfire.
What Else? Joshua tree seed will be collected from 25 areas in each park by interns from a youth conservation organization as well as volunteers.
