Heartwood

Man and two women in bare feet sit together on a rocky shoreline
Willy Clemetson, Heidi Wilson, and Sarina Partridge of Heartwood

At Large Residency 2023

Heartwood is a trio of singers and composers (Sarina Partridge, Heidi Wilson, Willy Clemetson) creating new, meaningful music in wild places — music that connects people with the natural world. With simple lyrics and rich vocal harmonies, these singers and instrumentalists weave music that collaborates with the natural world around them, inspired by the wild without and within. Sarina, Heidi and Willy met in 2019 while touring and teaching with the group Northern Harmony, singing harmony music from around the world, and have since connected around a shared passion for exploring the music flowing through them, now — music that grows out of the woods, the water, the rock, and the trees. They come together in wilderness places to collaborate with the landscape, composing music for performance and community singing. Heartwood has done residencies and collaborations on Ni-azhawa'am-minis/Rabbit Island in Lake Superior; Martha's Vineyard. Current projects include the Rabbit Island Songmap, creating an original musical, and working on a studio recording. They are eager to come together in Acadia National Park to collaborate with the rugged landscape, listening deeply for the songs that want to come through.

When endless facts detailing the crises of our era can leave us overwhelmed and unmoved, perhaps it is through the ancient art of harmony song, a language of cellular resonance, that we will find ourselves beautifully beholden to the whole — and motivated by our undeniable connection to fiercely protect it.
