Project Vision and Purpose

A well-functioning water and wastewater system is the backbone of every park operation and greatly contributes to a positive visitor experience at Acadia National Park. The Schoodic District’s water and wastewater systems are comprised of aging infrastructure that must be updated to ensure the protection of adjacent waters and lands. The project is funded by the Great American Outdoors Act and will address $6.4 million of deferred maintenance.

Schoodic District’s water systems were constructed with a shallow embedment which allows the existing pipes to freeze with Maine's frigid winters. This project will install insulated pipes to prevent freezing and complete other critical rehabilitation work to the well house, water treatment building, and water tank.

The project also includes the installation of a digital Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to more efficiently monitor the water and wastewater systems.

The National Park Service awarded a $7.8 million contract to rehabilitate the water and wastewater distribution systems in Acadia National Park’s Schoodic District. Funded by the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), the project improved critical utility systems, which were installed in the 1970s.
