A Look Back at 10 Years of Structural Fire Protection Interns

The NPS Structural Fire Protection Internship Program is celebrating 10 years of park structural fire protection. The program provides work experience for students in fire protection engineering, fire protection, administration, and fire investigation while the students complete critical structural fire management responsibilities for the park.

The program kicked off in the summer of 2012 with a goal of ten interns placed on site each summer. Since then, 75 parks and three regional offices have benefitted from the extra student assistance to meet structural fire program goals. Since inception, 80 students have gained hands-on work experience in their field of choice. These students are encouraged to continue work in the structural fire field and may eventually work for the National Park Service.
