100th Anniversary Commemoration of the 1924 Marine Maneuvers at Antietam

On August 31 and September 1, 2024 Antietam National Battlefield will Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 1924 Marine Corps Maneuvers at Antietam National Battlefield. In 1924 the entire Marine Expeditionary Force (over 3,000 Marines) marched to Antietam Battlefield from Quantico, Virginia and participated in 11 days of training and events. Over 100,000 people visited the Marine camp during the event. Talks, music, equipment displays and living history will be presented to commemorate the importance of the United States military and the U.S.M.C. in the establishment and early history of this Civil War battlefield.

On Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Marine Corps Historical Company and the National Museum of the United States Navy will have displays of historic Marine Corps uniforms and equipment from the 1924 period. Bravo Co., 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion is bringing a modern Light Armored Vehicle. On Saturday at 1:00 p.m. there will be a commemorative ceremony featuring a brass quintet from “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band and talks by Dr. Brian F. Neumann, Chief Historian, Marine Corps History Division and Keith Snyder, Antietam’s Chief of Interpretation. Sunday’s schedule includes a program at 11:15 a.m. by Gordon Calhoun, Historian and Curator at the National Museum of the United States Navy on the Navy’s airship program. Two military balloons were brought to the battlefield in 1924. At 1:15 there will be an illustrated program on the 1924 encampment. Marine Corps Historical Company (USMCHC)
USMCHC is a not-for-profit educational corporation established to support the United States Marine Corps, and Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Their mission is the presentation and preservation of Marine Corps history by developing and providing outreach and educational programming focused on telling the story of the United States Marine Corps and its people.

The National Museum of the United States Navy
The museum, located in Washington D.C. which is part of the Naval History and Heritage Command which serves the U.S. Navy through the preservation and interpretation of artifacts, art, archives and other assets. The NMUSN is one of ten NHHC museums around the country.

“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band
Their mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization was established July 11, 1798 by an Act of Congress

Marine Corps University
The Marine Corps University’s mission is to deliver Professional Military Education and training through resident and distance learning programs, while also preserving and presenting the history of the Marine Corps, in order to prepare leaders to meet current and future security challenges and inform the public of the service’s role in national defense.

U.S.M.C., Company B, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion
Their mission is to conduct combined arms reconnaissance and security operations as part of a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) to establish a designated secure area, provide combat information, reaction time, and maneuver space. On order, we conduct combined arm offensive and defensive economy of force operations to preserve the combat power of the MAGTF.
