2023 Spring Battlefield Hikes

Please note that the programs will go on rain or shine. Each hike is approximately
2 miles in length and will last about 2 hours. Hiking shoes/boots are strongly recommended for these programs. All hikes begin at 1:00 pm.

Sunday, March 19th
Irish Brigade

Description: The Annual Irish Brigade Hike will follow in the footsteps of Brigadier General Thomas Francis Meagher and the four regiments of the famous Irish Brigade. The hike will begin at the New York State Monument and end at the Bloody Lane. Be prepared for unpredictable March weather.

Sunday, March 26th
I Corps at Antietam

Description: This hike will focus on the U.S. I Corps’ actions on September 16th and 17th, including the evening fight in the East Woods and the morning fight over the “Bloody Cornfield.” Meet the ranger at the New York State Monument.

Sunday, April 2nd
12th Massachusetts in the Cornfield

Description: This hike will focus on the 12th Massachusetts Regiment and their action in the Cornfield. The regiment suffered the highest percentage of casualties, on the Federal side, at the battle. Meet the ranger at the New York State Monument.

Sunday, April 16th
Final Attack

Description: This hike will focus on the engagement of U.S General Orlando Willcox’s division against the Confederate battle line in and around Sharpsburg. Meet the ranger at the National Cemetery parking lot along route 34.

Sunday, April 23rd
West Woods

Description: This hike will focus on Willis Gorman’s Second Corps U.S. Brigade and their fight in the West Woods. Meet the ranger at the New York State Monument.

Sunday, April 30th
Middle Bridge/ V Corps

Description: This hike will focus on the action around the Middle Bridge, especially the afternoon attack spearheaded by the U.S. V Corps and the Confederate defenses on Cemetery Hill. Meet the ranger at the historic Newcomer House along Route 34.

Sunday, May 7th
Sunken Road

Description: This hike will focus on the action at the famous Sunken Road. Meet the ranger at the New York State Monument.

Sunday, May 14th
Burnside Bridge

Description: This hike will focus on the Union 9th Corps attacks at the Lower Bridge. Meet the ranger at the parking lot at Tour Stop #8.
