2021 Battle Anniversary Schedule

Thursday, September 16th
  • Prelude to Battle - A battlefield hike that will look at the events that unfolded throughout the afternoon and evening of September 16, 1862. Meet at the New York State Monument, 6pm, for this 90 minute hike.
 
Friday, September 17th
  • Sunrise at Antietam - Experience sunrise on the morning of the 159th Anniversary in the historic Cornfield. Meet at Tour Stop 4, 6:45 am, for this 45 minute ranger led program.
  • Battlefield Hikes - Detailed hikes following the battle in the Cornfield, West Woods, Sunken Road on the morning half of the hike and Burnside Bridge, and Final Attack during the afternoon portion of the hike. The morning program starts at the visitor center at 9:15am and the afternoon hike will meet at Tour Stop 9, 1:15pm. Each hike will last approximately 3 hours. Be prepared to hike through fields and rolling terrain.
  • Ranger Guided Driving Tour - Car caravan tour of the battlefield. Follow the park ranger in your own vehicle to three key stops. The tour begins at the visitor center, 10am and 1pm. Expect each tour to run approximately 2 hours.
  • Orientation Talks - Overview of the Maryland Campaign. These talks will take place at the visitor center, 12 noon, and 2pm. 30 minute program.
 
Saturday, September 18th
  • Battlefield Hikes - Detailed hikes following the battle in the Cornfield, West Woods, Sunken Road on the morning half of the hike and Burnside Bridge, and Final Attack during the afternoon portion of the hike. The morning program starts at the visitor center at 9:15am and the afternoon hike will meet at Tour Stop 9, 1:15pm. Each hike will last approximately 3 hours.   • Children's Activities - Hands on Signal Corps program. These programs will be held at the Mumma Farm, 10am, 1pm, and 3pm. 30 minute program.
  • Weapon Firing Demonstrations - Living history program demonstrating artillery and infantry. These programs will take place near the visitor center at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. 45 minute program.
  • Civil War Music - Hear and learn about the music of the Civil War. This program will take place at the Mumma Farm, 11:15am. 45 minutes.
  • Civil War Photography - See the wonders of wet plate photography during this 30 minute program. These talks will take place at the Mumma Farm, 12 noon and 2pm.

  • National Cemetery Talk - Learn about the history of the Antietam National Cemetery during this 30 minute program. Meet at the cemetery, 1pm and 3pm.
  • U.S. Sanitary Commission - Living history volunteers will tell the story of the commission and the role it played in improving the life of the Civil War soldier. Their camp will be set up at the Mumma Farm and is open to the public 9am until 5pm.
 
Sunday, September 19th
  • Battlefield Hike - Alexander Gardner's Antietam Photographs. Meet at the visitor center, 9:15am for this 2 hour hike over the northern end of the field.
  • Orientation Talks - Overview of the Maryland Campaign. Meet at the visitor center for these 30 minute programs, 10am and 2pm.
  • Weapon Firing Demonstrations - Living history program demonstrating artillery and infantry. These programs will take place near the visitor center at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm and will last about 45 minutes.
  • Civil War Music - Hear and learn about the music of the Civil War. This program will take place at the Mumma Farm, 10:15am, and last 45 minutes.
  • Civil War Photography - See the wonders of wet plate photography during this 30 minute program. Meet at the Mumma Farm, 11:15am and 1:15pm.

  • The Emancipation Proclamation - Learn about one of the most important outcomes of the Battle of Antietam. This program will take place at the Mumma Farm, 12:15pm, and last approximately 45 minutes.
  • National Cemetery Talks - Learn about the history of the Antietam National Cemetery during these 30 minute programs. Meet at the cemetery, 1pm and 3pm.
  • Battlefield Hike - This hike will focus on how the battle impacted the community of Sharpsburg. Meet at the visitor center, 1:15 pm, for this 2 hour program.
  • Children's Activities - Hands on Signal Corps program. This program will take place at the Mumma Farm, 2:15pm, and last about 30 minutes.
