Shortly before 3:00 P.M. on June 4, a severe storm ripped through Antietam Battlefield. Heavy rains and super strong winds toppled, at least 80 – 100 trees throughout the battlefield. The National Cemetery will remain closed until further notice due to the high number of fallen trees. No injuries were reported, but there was damage to a few of the historic buildings on the battlefield. The battlefield staff responded quickly to remove trees that had shut down the section of MD Rt. 65 that passes through the park as well as other blocked sections of the tour route. |
