Not only did the battle impact the soldiers and their families back home, the civilians that lived in and around the small town of Sharpsburg felt the impact of the battle for years after the two armies left the area. Approximately 1200 people lived in Sharpsburg at the time of the battle and there were numerous farmsteads that were greatly impacted by the carnage of war. Here are a few of their stories.
