The Main Line Canal and Allegheny Portage Railroad meant jobs were readily available! While the railroad was being built, "constant employment" was promised. The amount of pay was dependent on the type of job. A wide variety of jobs were needed to build this system and keep it in operation. Seasonal closures meant less workers were needed and some may be unemployed for months at a time. Lack of funds meant that sometimes workers didn't know when they would receive a paycheck and might have to rely on credit. |
