Many Missions, Many Nations

The Many Missions, Many Nations workshop is a FREE professional development course developed in partnership between the National Park Service Southwest Resource Protection Program and the Southwestern Mission Research Center. It combines learning, travel, and networking with peers to create enhanced opportunities for studies in the classroom.

 
 

Participant requirements:

  • Be a current K-12 teacher in Arizona, Sonora, or tribal school
  • Have a valid passport or tribal ID card
  • Speak and understand English
  • Attend entire workshop (Thursday evening through Sunday)

Participant benefits:

  • FREE. All inclusive (lodging, food, transportation) travel from Tucson
  • Multiple days of content delivered by subject matter experts in history, culture, and geography
  • Books and digital resource kit (over $100 value)
  • 20 hours continuing education credit
 

Important Dates:

November 15: Applications due
November 30: Acceptance packets and waitlist released
December 20: Waiver and placeholder due
January 20: Last day to cancel
February 20, 6:00 p.m.: Workshop begins in Tucson!
February 21-23: Tour proceeds through Arizona and Sonora.

Itinerary – February 20-23


Thursday, Pre-Tour Workshop

4:00 p.m. - Sonoran teachers board the shuttle at McDonald’s in Nogales, AZ.
5:00 p.m. - Check in at the hotel. Meet your roomie (if applicable).
6:00 p.m. - Welcome dinner, introductions, and orientation to the workshop.


Friday, Tour Day 1

8:00 a.m. - Leave Tucson (Hotel Tucson City Center), head south.
8:45 a.m. - Arrive at Mission Tumacácori.
10:00 a.m. - Leave Tumacácori to cross U.S.-Mexican border at Nogales.
12:00 p.m. - Arrive in Ímuris, where we make a brief stop to buy quesadillas and green corn tamales and stretch our legs.
12:30 p.m. - Depart Ímuris to Magdalena.
1:00 p.m. - Arrive in Magdalena to view Father Kino’s resting place and remains, visit the nineteenth-century mission church of Santa María de Magdalena, enjoy a picnic lunch provided by SMRC near the plaza, and allow for some shopping time on the Plaza Monumental.
3:00 p.m. - Leave Magdalena, stop in Altar to view mural behind the church, proceed to Caborca.
5:00 p.m. - Arrive at the Hotel El Camino in Caborca, and enjoy the first of our two famous margarita parties (~ 6:00) followed by dinner on the patio.

Saturday, Tour Day 2

8:00 a.m. - Following breakfast at the motel, we head east up the Altar Valley, with stops at three mission communities: San Antonio de Oquitoa, San Francisco de Átil, and San Pedro y San Pablo de Tubutama.
12:30 p.m. - Picnic lunch by the river at Tubutama.
2:00 p.m. - Leave Tubutama, retrace our path downstream to San Diego de Pitiquito.
4:30 p.m. - Arrive just before sunset at Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Caborca.
5:30 p.m. - Back to El Camino for another evening of great food and margaritas (~6:00)!

Sunday, Tour Day 3

8:00 a.m. - Following breakfast, leave motel and head east to visit the archaeological site of Trincheras and its neighboring museum.
9:15 a.m. - Arrive at the archaeological site of Trincheras.
10:45 a.m. - Continue eastward to San Ignacio where we’ll visit its lovely church and enjoy a leisurely lunch in the backyard garden of the retired sacristana, Sra. Josefina (“Chata”) Gallego.
2:30 p.m. - Leave San Ignacio to head north for the border. Arrive in Nogales, SN around 3:30pm. (Hasta luego, Sonoran teachers!) Depending on time required for crossing the border, we expect to arrive at Tucson around 7:00-8:00 pm.
