2012 Artist In Residence Program announced at Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island and New Jersey City University (NJCU) are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Artist-In-Residence program, which is for one month during the month of July. Three to six artists may be selected for the program. Artists may opt for a two-week, three-week or four-week residency.

Barge Capsizes Off Liberty Island
At approximately 9:50 a.m. on April 6, 2012, the work barge “Catherine G” was preparing to transport a construction crane off of Liberty Island when it capsized, sending the crane and two people into New York Harbor just off the north end of the island. A total of six people were onboard including, two captains, a U.S. Park Police Officer, the crane operator and two other crew members.

National Parks of New York Harbor brings visitors, money and jobs to NYC
New York, NY — A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that more than 17.5 million visitors in 2010 spent $462.3 million in the National Parks of New York Harbor and the communities surrounding them. That spending supported more than 5,300 jobs in the local area.

Statue of Liberty to mark 125th anniversary
To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, the National Park Service (NPS) is holding a special series of events on Oct. 28, 2011. The day honors the Statue’s history by evoking the original dedication festivities, but also confidently envisions the park’s future as a beacon of freedom in the high-tech global community.

Alluring History of Alcatraz
Alcatraz: Life on The Rock, a traveling exhibit that tells the legendary Alcatraz story through artifacts and interactive displays, debuts at the Statue of Liberty National Monument's Ellis Island Museum of Immigration on Oct. 1. The exhibit, which marks the first time these historic artifacts are available for public display, premieres on the third floor of the Grand Hall and is open to the public through Jan. 12, 2012.

Students Make History at Ellis Island
The story of 12 million immigrants who came to the United States through Ellis Island in search of the "American Dream" began with them sitting on a bench in the Great Hall. It was a wait of a lifetime, to begin a new life. If they passed the mental and physical exams they would be able to start a new chapter in their lives in America. That small but significant historical fact was brought back to life May 12, 2011 as high school students from upstate New York presented two replicas of those benches to Ellis Island.

Small Town Students Make Benchmarks in Big Apple
There was a distinct buzz in the air of the Great Hall on Ellis Island this past November. Six high school students closely scrutinized a few simple but sturdy wooden benches that once provided a resting place for immigrants waiting to be interviewed by officials on Ellis Island to see if they would be allowed to enter the United States. Curious visitors stopped to watch the busy teens some of whom rattled off numbers as others jotted down observations down, and a few took photographs of small details on each bench.

Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi placed his Statue on a federally owned island called "Bedloe's" in New York Harbor.  His original concept was to place a statue of a woman at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
