This week Point Reyes National Seashore completed site improvements at the Limantour Beach area of the park. Site improvements were performed to enhance the access and visitor restroom area. The park receives 2.3 million visitors annually and Limantour Beach receives close to 200,000 visitors each year. Superintendent Don Neubacher stated, "The park appreciated the public working with us as the site was restored and improved. We realize the work inconvenienced some park visitors but has created a vast improvement to the area." Paved, disabled access parking and improved access to the restrooms was completed. Wood benches were also made and installed by park Facilities Management staff for visitors and a shower was installed to wash off sandy feet. In addition, steps to the main complex were installed to improve visitor safety and the area was landscaped with native plant species. Before the National Seashore was established, the Limantour Beach area was once slated for more than 1,200 housing units and a commercial strip by the Drakes Beach Estates, Inc. The first lots were sold in 1960. Since the park acquired the lands, the park has provided recreational access and conducted restoration of stream and dune systems. -NPS- |

In addition to raising sea levels and temperatures, the increased concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is changing ocean chemistry by reducing the pH of the ocean. This decreased pH reduces the availability of minerals which marine organisms use to build shells and reef structures. More...
