The Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox of September 22, rises on September 18.
Leaves are dropping everywhere from the California Buckeye trees. Look for the fuzzy green "tennis balls" forming. These pods hold a fleshy chestnut brown seed. Bay trees also have their small lemon colored pods, the outer coat of which will become purple when the nut inside is ripe.
Gray squirrels are scrambling through trees, barking away in their fall mating season. These avid climbers make a raspy, barking sound to attract mates.
The park hosts a naturalization ceremony on Friday, September 20 at the Bear Valley Picnic Area beginning at 11 am. New citizens will be sworn in and welcomed. The event is open to the public.
On Saturday, September 21, Limantour Beach will benefit from California Coastal Cleanup Day. Meet at the main Limantour Beach parking lot at 10 am to clean up the beach.
A mapping service vehicle has been on park roads to take information on the Lighthouse routes; finishing up this week.
