The National Weather Service report for this morning states, a potent weather system will spread rain, wind, and the possibility of thunderstorms over the area today. Urban and small stream flooding will be possible as the ground is saturated from recent storms and moderate to heavy rain is expected today. Excess runoff from heavy rainfall will cause ponding or localized flooding as the frontal system pushes through. Smaller creeks and streams could rise quickly...possibly reaching flood stage briefly. Large west-northwesterly swells locally in excess of 18 feet will create a dangerous near shore environment. These conditions will result in strong rip currents and sneaker waves. Use extreme caution along the shoreline. Park visitors should be advised that the combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds may cause falling of trees along roads and trails within the Point Reyes National Seashore which could lead to temporary closures. Damaging winds, gusting to as high as 60 miles per hour, are also predicted. National Park Service staff are checking all culverts before the storms arrive to make sure they are free of any debris so water can flow through more easily. Staff is also placing gas-powered generators near wells and buildings to allow operations to continue due to power outages already at Bear Valley and the Lighthouse area. -NPS- |
