Park Fire and Fuels Management Staff to Conduct Controlled Pile-Burning

Fire and Fuels Management Staff at Point Reyes National Seashore will be burning a series of vegetation debris piles out at the Estero throughout the next several weeks. Burning will typically take place between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday if weather conditions allow. The Estero debris piles consist of non-native plant material removed from the park during the summer field season. Many of the piles include slash from non-native Monterey Pine trees which were removed to reduce hazardous fuels. Several piles will also be burned along the Highway One corridor, consisting of debris removed from around park residences to create defensible space. Pile-burning is a cost effective means of vegetation debris disposal which is regulated by the Bay Area Air Quality District. Residents are reminded that pile-burning on private property requires a permit from the local fire department.
