Butter Mold

Butter Mold and Cubed Butter

What: Notice anything similar between the butter mold and the box of butter? Part of making butter was the shaping of the butter. The butter was pressed into the mold to shape it, then forced out of the mold with the plunger. Some butter molds were more decorative than others. A fancy design was carved into the flat piece of the plunger. When the plunger pushed the butter out, the design was left on the top of the butter.

Who: Making butter was a part of pioneer life. The children were a major part of butter making.
