Lassen Volcanic National Park Road Reopens to Bumpass Hell Parking Area Today; Anticipate Road Open Through Park Next Week.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent, Mary G. Martin, announced that road crews reopened the road from the Southwest Entrance to the Bumpass Hell Parking area today. The various storms that have brought snow to the park during the month of April have made it difficult to keep roadways safely plowed. The road is also open to the Devastated Area ten miles from the Manzanita Lake Entrance on the north side of the park.

“Warmer weather combined with the lower levels of snowfall this past winter have really benefited road opening operations this year,” stated Superintendent Martin. According to the park’s Roads & Trails Supervisor the amount of snow in the park this year is about 60% of normal levels. “We would like to commend our road crew for their diligence, efficiency and safe work to complete this important work. We also thank CalTrans for their assistance and support of the park road opening with their staff and equipment,” said Martin.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is scheduled to open the main park road on Friday, May 18. As the road crew does the final clean up of the plowing operations there will be preliminary culvert work performed as part of the Federal Highways Project that will be done this summer along 12 miles of the park road. This should help to minimize delays for visitors driving the park road this spring and summer. The park website, www.nps.gov/lavo/lassen_roadsandtrails.htm provides the most current information on the park road opening operations and construction.

Even though it feels like summer in the valley, visitors should still be prepared for possible winter conditions as mountain weather can change quickly. It is best to dress in layers so you may adjust for changing weather conditions, blankets, food, water, sunscreen, and sunglasses. For more information and current road conditions, please visit the park website at www.nps.gov/lavo or contact the park at (530) 595-4444 or for TDD at (530)595-3480, Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
