Basic emergency services are available on the island, but contacting rangers for assistance can be difficult. Emergency response and evacuation take time, requiring you to reply on your own skills and equipment. Most private boaters on Lake Superior have radios and may be able to contact park rangers in an emergency. Cell phone service is unreliable; do not depend on it.

 

Safety is Your Responsibility

Isle Royale National Park is a remote archipelago in Lake Superior. To make the most of your visit, it is necessary that you plan ahead and prepare. Many services available on the mainland are not available on Isle Royale. Due to the unpredictable waters of Lake Superior, be prepared for any and all weather conditions. Check current conditions before your trip to learn what hazards may be present during your visit.
