NPS to Conduct Fall Prescribed Fires
The National Park Service is planning several prescribed fires this fall at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Approximately 1,075 acres are scheduled to be burned. Fire is used as a tool for the park’s long-term restoration and hazard fuel reduction efforts.

Ranger-led Tours Offered This Summer at Mount Baldy
The National Park Service will offer ranger guided hikes on Mount Baldy this summer at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The hikes will use a trail on the western edge of the dune that has been determined to be safe from holes and is the same path used to take news media on the dune last summer.

Dune Protection Work Begins at Portage Lakefront
During a storm in October of 2014, huge waves washed away between 75 and 115 feet of beach and dune at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk. On May 14th, park staff placed fencing along the remaining dunes at the site to help stabilize them and reduce the impact of future storms on that part of the lakeshore. Visitors and park neighbors are asked to help by staying out of the fenced areas so native vegetation has a chance to regrow and stabilize the dunes.

Pancakes Return to National Lakeshores Maple Sugar Time
Enjoy a pancake breakfast with pure maple syrup at this year’s Maple Sugar Time at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. In addition, to the free ranger-led tours of the sugaring operation at historic Chellberg Farm, a pancake breakfast will be available for purchase from the Chesterton Lion’s Club. Proposals Sought for National Lakeshore Chellberg Farm
The National Park Service is looking to reestablish a working agricultural landscape at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Chellberg Farm. Proposals are invited from the private sector to lease the historic farm, on a long-term basis, to conduct sustainable agriculture enterprises.

Final approval has been given for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Shoreline Restoration and Management Plan. A Record of Decision (ROD) for the plan and Environmental Impact Statement was signed by Acting Regional Director Patricia S. Trap on October 21, 2014.
