The National Park Service has completed a new long-range plan designed to guide the interpretive and educational programs and media at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The development of the plan included extensive input from partners, neighbors, stakeholders, and the general public.

The education and interpretation goals for national parks are derived from the purposes of each park as defined by Congress in the legislation creating the park. Long-range interpretive plans provide guidance for park staff in determining education objectives, programs audiences, and the types of media and personal services that could be used to accomplish those park goals. The primary purpose of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and all national parks, is to protect and preserve the natural and cultural resources of the park.

The long-range interpretive plan can be found on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/indu/parkmgmt/planning.htm. A copy of the plan will also be available for viewing by the public at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center.

For more information on the plan or other interpretation or education programs at the national lakeshore, contact the park’s information desk at 219-395-1882 or at indu_communications@nps.gov. The visitor center is located at 1215 N. State Road 49, in Porter, Indiana.

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is one of 394 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore includes 15 miles of the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan and 15,000 acres of beach, woods, marshes, and prairie in the northwest corner of Indiana. More than 2 million visitors come to this national park each year. More information can be found at www.nps.gov/INDU.
