Junior Wildland Firefighter Programs at the National Lakeshore
Meet the park’s fire crew and learn about their jobs and equipment. After this fun, hands-on program, children will receive their very own Junior Wildland Firefighter activity book and patch during this 60-minute program. Meet in the Dunewood Campground on September 12, at 10:00 am for this one-hour program.

Pinhook Bog Open House at National Lakeshore
Take a self-guided hike into Indiana’s only quaking bog on Saturday, September 12. Rangers and volunteers stationed along the Pinhook Bog Trail in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will help you understand this unique place filled with carnivorous plants. Allow about one hour to walk the trail and tour the bog. This open house will be held from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Bailly Homestead & Chellberg Farm Open House at National Lakeshore
Learn about the centuries-old lifestyles of Duneland residents by exploring the historic Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This open house will be held on Sunday, September 13, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Park in the Bailly & Chellberg Parking Lot and walk the trail to the Homestead and Farmhouse.

The Chellberg/Bailly parking lot is on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana. Music Heritage Series at National Lakeshore
Tune up your vocal chords and join in with the Save the Tunes Council as they perform traditional music associated with autumn. Gather up on Friday, September 18, from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center.

The Save the Tunes Council is a group of local musicians devoted to preserving and passing on folk songs in the traditional way, using a variety of musical instruments including guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, bagpipe, penny whistle, hurdy gurdy, and other obscure instruments.

Apple Program at National Lakeshore’s Chellberg Farm
Explore Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Chellberg Farm during an “Apples, Apples, Apples” program and open house hosted by a ranger and volunteers on Saturday, September 19, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Celebrate this season of apples through traditional craft and farming demonstrations at the historic Chellberg Farm. Watch a cooking demonstration on a traditional woodstove or try your hand at an old-fashioned apple cider press before enjoying a free sample of cider. Stop by the farm’s garden to see what’s being harvested and preserved this time of year, or just sit back and enjoy “Banjo Bob” Ahrendt as he sings some traditional songs in front of the farm house. This event is free and receives support from the Friends of Indiana Dunes.

History Ride with Buffalo Soldiers at National Lakeshore
Join Tommy O. Penson and Stage Coach Productions as they reenact the work of the famous Buffalo Soldiers on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Glenwood Dunes Trail. The Buffalo Soldiers were established by Congress as the first peacetime, all-black regiments in the U.S. Army. Later, Buffalo Soldiers also served as some of the first park rangers in a variety of western parks in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
 
Riders, in authentic uniforms, will demonstrate horsemanship typical of a turn of the last century Buffalo Soldier. Free pony rides will be offered for children from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and again from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. To learn more about the work of Buffalo Soldiers, there will be presentations from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, after which there will be photo opportunities for your child with a soldier. You can even bring your own horse to accompany these reenactors on a trail ride from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

Bailly Cemetery Hike at National Lakeshore
Join a ranger for a leisurely hike to the historic Bailly Cemetery on Sunday, September 20, from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm. During the walk, enjoy the beauty of the early fall woodlands near Chellberg Farm while you learn a little bit about the history of this site in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Campfire on Kemil Beach at National Lakeshore
Enjoy a campfire on the beach at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Kemil Beach. Join a ranger on Friday, September 25, from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm. We’ll provide the ingredients so you can roast some marshmallows for making s’mores while you enjoy a sing along with local musician Banjo Bob. Bring a flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot.

Park at the Kemil Beach Parking Lot and walk down to the beach. The lot is located at 27 N. East State Park Road, one mile north of U.S. Highway 12. Kayak Fishing with a Ranger at National Lakeshore
Join a ranger for a paddle on Lake Michigan in the pursuit of Lake Michigan’s Chinook salmon. Meet the ranger at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Portage Lakefront on Saturday, September 26, from 7:00 am – 10:00 am. You must provide all of your own equipment, including kayak, obey state fishing laws, and wear a lifejacket.

Open House at the National Lakeshore’s Douglas Center
Enjoy fun, family-friendly activities at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Paul H. Douglas Center every Saturday from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Then, take the kids outside to the center’s Nature Play Zone where unstructured play in nature is encouraged. You can also help feed the center’s resident turtles and fish or join a ranger for a hike in the beautiful Miller Woods.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12.
