Learning about the job of firefighters and the importance of fire prevention is important for kids of all ages. During the summer months kids can participate in the Jr. Wildland Firefighter program as part of their visit to Indiana Dunes. Kids learn about prescribed fire, fire ecology, and have a hands on experience with equipment used in wildland fire management. Upon completion of the program, kids will receive their own Jr. Wildland Firefighter activity book and patch.

The program is designed for kids ages 7 - 12 and takes place during the summer season. Dates and times can be found on the park's events calendar.

Activities take place outside, so particpants should dress comfortably for outdoor activities. Hats and sunscreen are recommended on sunny days and rain gear is recommended if the weather looks stormy. Close-toed shoes are preferred (participants are discouraged from wearing flip-flops due to safety concerns). Please bring plenty of water.

Kids who want to participate in the program but can't visit the park can download the Jr. Wildland Firefighter activity booklet and complete it at their own pace. Completed books can be mailed back to the park in exchange for the Jr. Wildland Firefighter patch. Please mail completed books to:
