Youth, grades 7 through 12, are invited to enter Hawai`i Volcanoes' Second Annual It's My Park! Film Festival. Students will create a three-minute film about the park and share their perspectiive on why "It's My Park!" The film is due by September 1, 2010.

"This Film Festival is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and talent," said Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando. "Hawai`i Volcanoes and its partners will provide the equipment and training as well as transportation to and from the park."

Free transportation from Puna and Ka`u will be provided. A van will pick up from Ka`u on July 16 and 30, and from Puna on July 23 and August 6. Call Laura Williams at 985-6304 to reserve a seat on the van.

Cameras to film the park may be checked out for free at the park's Kilauea Visitor Center. A photo ID and contact information will need to be left to borrow a camera.

Editing equipment, training and support will be available at the park on August 13, 14, 16-21, 27 and 28th. To sign up for editing time, call Laura at 985-6304.

Films will be judged on 1) story progression (a beginning, middle and end), 2) smooth transitions, 3) images that fit and support the story, 4) music that fits the mood and tone of the story and 5) editing and titles.

In September, the films will be posted on-line and the public will be invited to vote. Prizes, including MacBook computers and digital cameras will be awarded at a gala festival in the park on National Public Lands day, September 25, 2010.

Last years People's Choice winner, Malina Fagan, graduated from Hilo High School in June and is headed to film school in California this fall. The Grand Prize winner for 10th to 12th grade was Ulu Makuakane from Kamehameha School. The Grand Prize winner for 7th to 9th grade was Kukui Keliihoomalu from Pahoa High School. Each won a MacBook computer and digital video recorder. Additional prizes were awarded to other film festival entrants.

Digital Mountain: It's my Park! is co-sponsored by the Hawai`i Natural History Association, Friends of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, KapohoKine Adventures, Hawai`i Forest and Trails and Friends of the Future.
