WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Visitors can access many of Glacier National Park’s facilities, trails, and roads during the holiday weekend. Glacier Park Lodge opens Friday, May 28, as does the Two Medicine Camp Store. Lake McDonald Lodge and the Lake McDonald Camp Store are also open to visitors. Waterton Inter-nation Shoreline Cruises, LTD, start boat tours to Goat Haunt on Saturday, May 29. Glacier Park Boat Company boat tours and rentals at Lake McDonald and the Swan Mountain Outfitters horseback rides at the Apgar and Lake McDonald corrals are open as well. Glacier Guides, Inc., Sun Tours and Red Bus Tours are available by reservation. Campgrounds at Bowman Lake, Cut Bank, Kintla Lake, Many Glacier, Rising Sun, St. Mary and Two Medicine all open Friday, May 28. Sprague Creek and Apgar Campgrounds are also open. The St. Mary Visitor Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Apgar Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boaters are reminded that effective Tuesday, June 1, a permit will be required for all motorized boats before launching in Glacier National Park waters. Park managers request that all boats and trailers be clean and dry before launching in park waters. The new permits are part of a state-wide effort to prevent the unintentional spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS.) Park trail crews are busy installing bridges and a number of trails are now cleared and accessible. Vehicles can travel as far as the Avalanche Campground area on the west side of the Sun Road and to the Jackson Glacier overlook on the east. Construction crews are not working this holiday weekend, so there are no restrictions planned for hiking and bicycling access. To allow for spring road rehabilitation, the earliest possible date that the entire Sun Road can open to through-traffic across Logan Pass is June 18, 2010 weather permitting. All other park roads are now open for motorized traffic. Construction crews continue to make progress on the Sun Road overlay project from the Apgar Transit intersection to Avalanche Campground. Visitors will find about half of the project already complete. The project is scheduled to end about June 6. Crews will not work during the Memorial Day Weekend. Starting Tuesday, June 1 visitors should plan for short delays of 15-to-30 minutes. Given spring road work caution is urged on Sun Road as road conditions can vary. Visitors are encouraged to get the most current road conditions for Glacier National Park by calling 511, the Montana Department of Transportation Traveler Information System.
