What is the future of the Great Kills Marina?

Gateway National Recreation Area is prepared to offer a three year temporary concessions contract for marina services at Great Kills Marina. This marina will be a temporary facility located at the current location. While we have not determined a time frame for when boaters can dock their vessels, the National Park Service will be working quickly to award a temporary contract.

The first step necessary is to complete an assessment of the damage to the marina, which will include an underwater survey. Once this has been done, we will know the number of temporary floating docks that can be safely put in, which may be a different number from what was there. Construction will begin once it is safe to do so and after any approvals needed have been obtained. The assessment should begin the first week of March 2013, and we expect the report by the end of March 2013.

UPDATE AS OF 3/26/2013
We have received the report about the damage to the marina. There is significant damage to the bulkhead and about 15 areas of debris in the marina. All of the pilings need to be removed, and 50% of them can be re-used. We are moving ahead and will use Department of Transportation funding to repair the bulkhead and remove the debris as quickly as possible. These are important first steps that need to be taken care of before we can create the temporary marina at Great Kills.

FAQS

When will I be able to put my boat back in the water?

The timeline for this has not been determined. An assessment of the damage must be done first, then any environmental compliance (if needed) must be completed, then construction of a temporary floating dock facility can occur. Negotiation with a potential marina operator will also occur.

Will the number of docks/slips be the same?

We are not sure at this time. Once the assessment is done, we will be able to determine how many temporary floating docks can be put in. Slips will be made available to the boating community by the marina operator.

Will the rates stay the same?

The rates for docks is undetermined at this time.
