White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
White-tailed deer are found in forests, wooded uplands, and wetlands. There are large populations of deer in both the Sandy Hook and Staten Island units. Deer are herbivores, eating nuts, berries, twigs, and leaves.

Breeding season for deer, also called rut, is from October through January. Deer are especially active during this time, and may be aggressive.

It is illegal to feed deer (and any wild animal) on park property.
