Women

Women played varied roles in the history of the park. Before and during the Civil War, enslaved women sought freedom and worked to create a better future for their families. Women wrote accounts of the battles that raged near their homes. Women supported the war effort through relief organizations and served as nurses in the aftermath of battle. After the war, white Southern women led memorialization efforts and sought control over the narrative of the war that would pass down through generations.
