Echinus Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin is the largest known acid-water geyser in the world, spouting 30-40 feet (9-12 m) high. With a pH between 3.3-3.6, the water in this geyser is as acidic as vinegar. Such geysers are rare because they tend to destroy their own plumbing systems.

Echinus Geyser is named for its sinter deposits which look like the spines of echinoderms such as sea urchins or sea stars. Once very predictable, Echinus’ eruption pattern has now become erratic.
