Steamboat Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin is the world’s tallest active geyser. During its rare 3-40 minute long eruptions, it throws water 300-400 feet (90-122 m) high, drenching the walkway. For hours following its rare major eruptions, Steamboat thunders with a massive column of steam. Steamboat’s full eruptions are unpredictable, occurring anywhere from a few days to 50 years apart. More commonly, the geyser shoots water in bursts of 10 to 40 feet (3-12 m).

Three photos: Steamboat Geyser in full eruption; and two showing Cistern Spring both empty and full

Cistern Spring is linked underground and completely drains of water during a major Steamboat eruption.
