The panel discussion is entitled, “Everything everGLADES,” and will be an in-depth discussion on the ecology and sustainability, social justice and the arts in the Everglades. Anyone interested is invited to attend.
The event is part of a special series of art exhibits by the Artists in Residence in the Everglades (AIRIE) program, highlighting the park’s international designation as a World Heritage Site. AIRIE’s art exhibition, “Common Ground: Artists in the Everglades,” opened on September 19 at FAU, in the University Galleries, located in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. The exhibition is inside the Schmidt Center Gallery, located at 777 Glades Road (Boca Raton campus). The art exhibition will be open through November 5. All events are free and open to the public.
The art exhibition, “Common Ground: Artists in the Everglades” presents selected artists from Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE), a unique program that provides an extraordinary opportunity for artists to reside within Everglades National Park. Organized by Donna Marxer, this unique program was started in 2001. The program brings professional artists to reside for one month within the park to create original works from their experience of living in our nation’s most environmentally endangered ecosystem. Jill Lavetsky and Sybille Welter, co-curators of “Common Ground,” have selected a group of eight artists who have participated in AIRIE in the past few years. The exhibition aims to provide an overview of the dynamic works that have been produced by a variety of artists from this distinctive residency.
The University Galleries at FAU are open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Group and class tours are welcome during public hours as well as at other times scheduled by appointment. DIRECTIONS & PARKING From I-95 or the Florida Turnpike, exit onto Glades Road, heading east. Approximately 1 mile east of I-95, turn left at the main FAU entrance (West University Drive). Make your first right onto Indian River Street. Go straight through the first stop sign and turn left at St. Lucie Avenue South. Continue until you reach a 4-way stop sign. Make a left onto Arts Avenue. You may park for free during evening events in the parking garage to your left before you reach the roundabout. From the garage, walk west towards the University Theatre where the panel discussion is held. The Schmidt Center Gallery will be open prior to the event and is located in the same building as the Theater, to the south on the first floor.
