Park Conducts Pine Island Prescribed Burn

Homestead, Florida:  Everglades National Park will be conducting a 1,212 acre prescribed burn on Thursday December 13, 2012, in the Pine Island District of the park.  

The general location of this burn is south of the Main Park Road (once past the entrance station) to the cut off to Royal Palm.  Royal Palm is not included in this operation.  It includes units N & O which are pine block units located in the Pine Island housing area (north of maintenance and south of the Main Park Road).  The units are west of the road that connects the Main Park Road to Pine Island housing (see map).

Staff and equipment that have been dedicated to this prescribed burn include: 1 helicopter, 4 wild land fire engines, 3 Kubotas (All Terrain Vehicles), 1 law enforcement officer, and approximately 24 firefighters.  The Florida Forest Service will be assisting. Fire operations are set to continue throughout the day (weather permitting).
