Mushroom Rock Trail Closed to Horses, Hikers Use Caution
Mushroom Rock Trail is closed to horses due to hazardous conditions caused by recent flooding. Hikers use caution. Trail is washed out in place and may be difficult to follow.
Natural Features & Ecosystems
By far the most noticeable natural features in the monument are the rock pinnacles for which the monument was created to protect. Rising sometimes hundreds of feet into the air, many of these pinnacles are balancing on a small base, seemingly ready to topple over at any time. The Civilian Conservation Corps, during their occupation here in the 1930s, named many of the rock formations that can be seen today.
Did You Know?
The bush with the pretty red bark is manzanita, which is Spanish for little apple. These small berries are an excellent food source for black bears, coati-mundi, and many birds at Chiricahua National Monument.
