Ironweed

Vernonia angustifolia

Ironweed

Ironweed, (Vernonia angustifolia) is a leafy stemmed plant that flowers from June-September. It can be found in sandy, open ground, sandy woods, pine barrens, roadsides, old fields, and dry hammocks. It grows to about 2-4 feet tall and blooms August-October with maroon flowers in branched clusters at the top of the stem. It is an excellent plant for dry, sandy perennial borders where little else will grow. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens and butterfly gardens.
