Hibiscus laevis

Floridata.com

The Halberd Rosemallow (Hibiscus laevis) is a perennial herb that grows 4-6 feet tall. It features large, showy flowers which are light pink or white with scarlet throats. Its 5 petals open in the daytime for one day only and close tightly in the evening. A succession of blooms occur from May-November and grow best in full sun and moist soil. It attracts butterflies and is a good source of nectar. Related to okra, this plant has a gummy sap. (Other members of the mallow family produce sap that, when whipped with sugar, was the origin of our marshmallow candy!)
