Carl Sandburg Home NHS offers a variety of curriculum-based education programs and structured site visit plans. These programs are based on national education standards and the onsite curriculum program also follows the North Carolina course of study. Use of these programs are intended for educators to supplement existing topics in English, Literature and Social Studies with lesson plans crafted around the work and life of Carl Sandburg and his family.

Something about Sandburg
This curriculum-based program allows students the opportunity to explore the Sandburg family through artifacts, literature, and science! Students step back in time on a tour of the Sandburg House, explore genetics while visiting the barn and reflect while reading, writing and acting poetry. Pre and post visit activities relate directly to the on-site activities at the park.
Grades: 6-8th
Group size: Max 60 individuals
Chaperones: 1 per every 12 students
Program Length: 3.5 hours

Life on the Farm
Tour Connemara Farm and learn about what it was like raising goats with the Sandburg family!
Grades: K-3
Group size: Maximum 80 individuals
Chaperones: 1 per every 12 students

Where to, What Next?
Explore the life of Carl Sandburg from being a prairie town boy in Galesburg IL to a famous American Poet in Flat Rock, NC. Program will include house tour, barn tour as well as a chance to watch a video of Edward R Murrow interviewing Carl Sandburg.
Grades: 3-5th
Group size: Max 80 individuals
Chaperones: 1 per every 12 students
Program Length: 2-3 hours depending on group size

Through the Eyes of a Poet
Carl Sandburg found his inspiration to write through the things which surrounded his life. He wrote about struggle, love and even war. Learn how Sandburg was often a voice for those who felt they had none. Program will include house tour, barn tour as well as a chance to watch a video of Edward R. Murrow interviewing Carl Sandburg.
Grades: 9-12th
Group size: Max 60 individuals
Chaperones: 1 per every 12 students
Program Length: 2-3 hours depending on group size
