HARKERS ISLAND, NC - This week the National Park Getaway explores four pristine barrier islands stretching along the Atlantic Ocean from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet in North Carolina. 

Accessible only by boat or ferry, except for one mainland visitor center, Cape Lookout National Seashore preserves a 56-mile stretch of largely undeveloped beach and shares the stories of the region's maritime past. 

Cape Lookout provides critical habitat for a diversity of rare resident wildlife and plants, including the Banker ponies of Shackleford Banks, one of the last wild horse populations on the East Coast. The barrier islands also provide refuge for several migratory threatened and endangered species.
