Long Point Cabins Civic Engagement

The National Park Service (NPS) is conducting Civic Engagement for this project and will hold a virtual meeting on Friday, December 11th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (EDT) to discuss ideas for Cape Lookout National Seashore's (CALO's) potential relocation of its recreational cabins on North Core Banks.

The recreational cabins are currently located near Long Point on North Core Banks where a significant over-wash occurred during Hurricane Dorian in 2019. The storm significantly impacted the cabins and surrounding area leaving them unavailable for subsequent use for multiple reasons. The NPS would like to solicit public insight on potential areas to rebuild the cabins and supporting infrastructure as it endeavors to reestablish public access in the most desirable location possible.

CALO is considering several potential options for the repair of the Long Point Cabins. Currently three locations are being considered. The current existing location, a southern location located one mile south of the existing site and a northern location approximately 4 miles north.

The existing site is close to the existing ferry but the area has narrowed significantly since the cabins were built and past erosion reduction efforts have not worked. The site was heavily impacted by Hurricane Dorian and several storms after. Currently the cabins are closed until repairs can be made.

The southern site is in close proximity to the ferry dock but elevation is low and the sand dunes are small which both provide limited protection. Also breaches did occur north and south of this site during Hurricane Dorian.

The northern location is more than four miles away but does have another access point, besides the beach and beach access road, by way of a former dock and road. These facilities would need to be rebuilt and reestablished. This site is within the widest area on the island and has not received major storm impacts to date. Some new facilities would need to be constructed within a wetland.

Please let us know what issues and concerns you feel the National Park Service should consider in its planning efforts to repair the Long Point Cabins.
