The 1847 Applegate Trail, part of the California National Historic Trail, is the southern route into Oregon. From Fort Hall in present-day Idaho to the upper Willamette Valley, settlers blazed a trail through almost 500 miles of wilderness—in less than four months. The year was 1846.
“Our hearts are broken. As soon as our families are settled and time can be spared we must look for another way that avoids the river.” -Lindsay Applegate referring to the loss of family in the Columbia River rapids.
You can view these exhibits at Emigrant Lake County Park southeast of Ashland, Oregon, off Highway 66.
