Kiteboarding

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has become famous for kiteboarding. Everyone from beginners to world-class boarders come to the area beaches to experience flat sand, shallow soundside water, and our famous steady and strong winds.

Kiteboarding is a sport that involves using wind power with a large kite to pull a rider across water. It combines aspects of paragliding, surfing, windsurfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and wakeboarding to make for one fun and unique sport. Some of the best kiteboarders have jumped over 35 meters above the water, and reached hangtimes of over 20 seconds.

Kiteboarding is a fun and challenging sport. There are many local businesses that will rent equipment and provide lessons for beginners.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing at the Outer Banks is a tried and true tradition dating back decades. Just like kiteboarding, the steady winds, shallow sounside waters, and easily accessible beaches allow windsurfers a near perfect experience.

Windsurfing is a wind propelled water sport that is a combination of sailing and surfing. It is also sometimes called "sailboarding" and "boardsailing" and emerged as a sport in 1960s California. The sport woul gain popularity in the late 1970s by spreading to the east coast, and became an Olympic sport in 1984.

While there are many different styles of windsurfing, local retailers are able to rent equipment, and many offer lessons as well.
