The National Park Service (NPS) Salvo Day Use Area, south of the villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, will reopen on May 1, 2012 to the general public. The area was temporarily closed in September 2011 due to flooded conditions from Hurricane Irene. After the storm, NPS issued a special use permit that allowed Dare County officials to use the open, expansive area as a Hatteras Island collection point for tons and tons of debris left in Hurricane Irene's wake. For several months, contracted truckers hauled debris from across Hatteras Island to the collection point for eventual removal to the Bertie County landfill. As a condition of the permit, the contractor was asked to restore the site once the debris removal was completed.

The contractor has since re-seeded the site, repaved the access road, installed speed bumps, and repaired the road shoulders.Portions of the re-seeded area may remain closed until new grass is well established.
