Steep Road Grade
There is a 13% grade for an approximate 5 mile stretch on Highway 297 between Bandy Creek Road on the west of the river and Headquarters on the east side. This is called the gorge. Use caution when traveling with recreational campers or horse trailers. More »

Firewood Quarantine
Firewood Ban is in effect for the park. Only firewood from the surrounding counties of Scott, Morgan, Pickett, and Fentress in Tennessee and McCreary in Kentucky can be brought into the park. Firewood is for sale or you may use dead and down wood. More »

Bandy Creek Bookstore Renovation

The bookstore at Bandy Creek is getting ready for a renovation; therefore, we need to clear our shelves. The staff has selected a number of items to deeply discount in order to make room for new, incoming titles. Most items are up to 40 percent off the original price and a few items have even lower prices. This is an excellent opportunity to find a bargain on quality books and other items. The sale will begin immediately and continue through November 13. This is also an excellent time to visit the beautiful Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Fall is definitely the time to enjoy the hiking trails, take a horseback ride, or perhaps just find a quiet spot and enjoy doing nothing at all. All park campgrounds will be open until the end of November, with some open year round, providing the perfect location for a family getaway in the outdoors. Did You Know?
Cumberland sandwort is one of several species of threatened and endangered plants found throughout Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Cumberland sandwort only grows in the dry sandy soils of certain rockshelters found in and around Big South Fork.
